Reflection #12

After reading Shayna's reflection about teaching online that made me think of how I would feel about teaching online. I have taken a health class online so I know what it feels like to be on the student's side of the online classes. From my experience it was difficult to complete this class because I had to be self-motivated. It was difficult for me but through the teacher's help I was able to stay motivated to complete the class. When it comes to online classes I believe the only way that they can be successful for the majority it through connection with the teacher and maybe even the students online classes will be great. Most of the online classes I have seen and heard of the students are soli working on learning the material with little interaction with the other students or the teacher. I feel that online classes would be more effective if the teachers would create podcasts and create webcam type class time where the students and teacher can communicate with each other. They could also do what Professor Sorenson said her online class did, which was to do a text based communication session. There most likely are more classes that have used these techniques.

If I am asked to teach an online I know that I will use these techniques to make my class more interactive and hopefully easier to stay motivated to complete the course and to do their best. I think it would be very interesting to teach an online class and I think I would look forward to the challenge and the experience.

  1. These are some good points, and make the possibility of teaching online courses more enjoyable. I agree that the online classroom environments and relationships that the students have with each other as well as their teacher will be largely affected by how the teacher chooses to set up his/her online course.

Also as Professor Sorenson mentioned in class, it will be interesting to see how yours and yours students online personalities develop.
